Design driven strategy to anchor a new direction

In the outer fjords of the district Sunnmøre lies the island of Runde and the southernmost bird cliff of Scandinavia. At this location Runde Miljøsenter has been established with the aim of meeting the need for research and tourism on the island (see figure 1). As the diversity of the organisation's tasks has grown, there has been a need to refine the research activity. Runde Miljøsenter was demerged and Brand Valley were hired to develop the strategy in collaboration with involved stakeholders.

The consept: “the ecosystem of Runde”

Through a close collaboration with the employees, the board and other stakeholders, we gained insights needed to develop possible strategical directions (Figure 2).

An important bearing point throughout the process was the islands vulnerable ecosystem and the sustainability responsibility that comes with it. The location is unique and of interest for both business and research purposes.

Figure 2: The five pillars of the Runde ecosystem

Finally, we condensed the concept known as the “Runde Ecosystem”. The first iteration had five pillars: the fish that spawn, different water conditions meet, birds nurture from the fish, business developed from the ocean and sustainable tourism (see Figure 2). Aspiring towards circular economy, human activity was seen as part of the ecosystem. In the next iteration the Ecosystem of Runde was simplified to bird, fish and human activity.

To cover the need for competence to understand the Runde ecosystem, many research communities must be included. The role of Runde as a research station is therefore to be a facilitator for the R&D environment. Runde Forsking AS can thus be an important contributor to sustainable development regarding life associated with Norwegian coastal areas.

Now that a new strategic direction was landed, we summarised the work in an investor prospectus, a quantified business model, and a future action plan.

Visualising in strategy development

When studying ecosystems, using a holistic approach is essential, which can be difficult to do from a scientific standpoint as it requires in-depth research. With the help of visualisation, we gained a common understanding of what the ecosystem Runde is and which direction Runde Forsking AS should take. The visualisation was essential for developing the strategy.

Brand Valley was commissioned to develop the “Prospect Runde” as a sustainable research location. Runde Miljøsenter was at a crossroads with regard to how to bring the company into the future. Brand Valley facilitated the process of business modelling through workshops, visualisation and systematic documentation of the findings. This was a useful exercise that brought the employees, board, and owners together into around a common strategy.
We recommend Brand Valley and the way they facilitate projects.
